Abstract

553,412. Fuel-injection pumps. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and TRAPP, G. J. Nov. 13, 1941, No. 14637. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In multi-cylinder fuel-injection pumps, the plungers 13, 14 are adapted to be reciprocated and, at times, rotated within the barrels 11, 12. To effect the rotation, sleeves 15, 16 are rotatably mounted upon the outside of the barrels and are connected with their plungers by pin- and-slot connections 13a, Fig. 1. Near their upper ends the sleeves are formed integrally with gear pinions 17, 18 respectively of equal pitch diameter and gearing with an actuating rack 19. Beyond the pinions the sleeves are formed as collars 21, 22 around which is wound a helical tension spring 23, the coils of which may be of elliptical section. This spring urges the teeth of the pinions in opposite directions against the teeth of the rack. In a modification the pinions and their respective collars are of different diameters. In a further modification, the pinions may rotate more than one revolution, the spring being wound more than once around each collar. In a still further modification, Fig. 5, the device is applied to an odd number of pinions, the central pinion 32 having a collar on either side to receive springs 23a, 23b, leading to the collars 34, 37 on the other pinions 31, 33.
