Abstract

552,810. Fire-extinguishing. HENSHAW, T. A. Sept. 17, 1941, No. 11880. [Class 47 (ii)] A sprinkler head comprises a body 1, Fig. 1, formed with a raised bead 4 against which seats the flat upper part of a single valve element 11 comprising a stainless steel outer shell a, a soft metal pad b, and a brass or other rigid metal base part c of larger diameter than the pad b, this part c engaging a softsealing ring 6 at the centre of a non-corrosive resilient metal diaphragm 5 secured by a screw clamping ring 7. The under surface of the part c is slotted to receive the upper end of a three-part thermocollapsible supporting member 7, the lower end of which rests on a pivot 13 carried by a screw plug 12 engaging the lower part of a spider 8 depending from the ring 7. A lock nut 14 serves to clamp the usual distributor plate 10. In a modified construction, Fig. 2, the head is inverted, the valve seating 4 is of a greater height than in the first example, and the valve member 11 has a depending flange 15 to surround the seating, while the body 1 of the sprinkler head is provided with a member of webs 16 to serve as limiting stops for the diaphragm 5. The space between the two seals is filled with sealing liquid 17, which extends up between the seating 4 and flange 15; the liquid may be anti-freezing. Instead of the limiting stops being on the body 1, they may be in the form of tongues or extensions 18, Fig. 3, on the diaphragm; these tongues are normally clear of a shoulder 19 on the body 1, but would contact with the shoulder before the diaphragm could pass its central position. In this construction, the valve 11 has two sealing faces, one a disc 20 to rest on the seat 4, and the other a ring 21 to engage the rolled edge 22 of the diaphragm 5.
