Improvements in the production of pictures, designs, letter-press or other markings on die-castings, mouldings or pressings

Abstract

552,799. Moulding and ornamenting plastic or metal articles. WOLVERHAMPTON DIE-CASTING CO., Ltd., and WHITEHEAD, E. G. March 9, 1942. No. 3026. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Pictures, designs, letterpress and other markings are produced on metal, plastic or other articles while being formed in a mould by producing the design on the inner surface of a die, or on a piece of metal inserted in the inner surface of the die, by a photo-etching process. The die is coated with a protective substance which is acted upon by light passed through a negative or positive transparency, with or without a screen, and the design is etched by acid &c. After the article is pressed or moulded in the die the counterpart of the etched die may be made more prominent by applying colours which are rubbed off to leave the coating in the hollows. If a light colour is used to the uncoloured projecting portions of the design it may be darkened by chemical action. If the design produced is a negative it may be rendered positive in appearance by using a coating pigment darker than the material of the moulded article.
