Abstract
552,696. Testing tensile strength of materials. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 5, 1941, No. 15699. Convention date Dec. 5, 1940. [Class 106 (ii)] A substantially rigid force-measuring element is connected in series with the specimen and:a' force indicator by means of a flexible string-like element which bows at high-frequency vibration of the force-measuring element and thus avoids transmission of the vibrations to the indicator. The motor M drives through universal couplings 7, 8, 9 and speed-reduction gears 10, 11 a vertical spindle 6 provided with a screwed portion 5 which engages a nut 4 on a yoke 3 engaging by the part 2 a collar on the specimen S. The latter is surrounded by al sleeve H which may be heated by an electric coil. The upper end of the specimen is attached to a spring bar 1 of flattened "O" shape of non-uniform crosssection to distribute the pull uniformly. A pin 13 attached on the inside of the lower limb of the "O" passes through the upper limb and is attached by a piano wire 14 to a recording lever 15 pivoting at 16 about cross plate spring pivots. A similar wire 20 is attached to an upper bar secured to the specimen and passed around pulleys 18, 19 on a lower bar 17 also secured to the specimen and up over a pulley 21 to a tension weight 25 after wrapping around the spindle ,of the recording cylinder. Since there are two vertical lengths of wire, the drum .is rotated an amount corresponding to twice the strain, ,whereas the pointer is moved ,according to the stress. When the specimen breaks, the wire 14 vibrates as shown and does not transmit shocks to the pointer. For slow speeds of testing, the motor .drives the spindle 6 through the reduction gears, but for high speeds drives direct. The nut disengages the screw if the motion of the nut 4 is.too,rapid to avoid breaking the spindle 6. A timing mechanism may be included in the motor energising circuit to interrupt the motor after a predetermined interval.
