Abstract
551,479. Locating optical elements on supports. HASSELKUS, J. W., and HAMAK, J. Aug. 21, 1941, No. 10687. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] Lateral movement of an optical element relative to a plate or other supporting member is prevented, while movement normally to the plate &c. is permitted, by the formation of projections extending from the plate to engage sides of, or recesses in, the optical element, molten liquid or plastic material being introduced into appropriate spaces while the element is held in correct position on the plate and being allowed to solidify to form the projections. As shown, a supporting plate a and a prism block o carrying a lens n are temporarily assembled in a. jig. The plate a has a light aperture e, Fig. 8, slots g and holes i to receive the molten &c. material, slots b, c, d by which it is ultimately secured for use in an instrument, and a locating hole f. Location of the plate in the jig is effected by a tube s engaging the aperture e and by a pin r entering the hole f. The prism block o is located by a tube t movable into position to engage the lens n, and by a slidable block v having faces w to engage prism faces under the pressure of a spring z; screws 2 secure the block after location. A groove p is previously formed across the base of the block o, and grooves x are previously formed at the lower edges of the faces w. The molten &c. material is injected through a duct y, while the parts are assembled in the jig, and fills the grooves, slots, and holes, to form fillets 3, 4, 5, Fig. 8, secured to the plate a. When the material has solidified, the parts are separated and reassembled in the instrument with the aid of the fillets.
