Abstract

549,738. Wheels and rollers. BASSICK CO. July 10, 1941, No. 8732. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1940. [Class 144 (i)] A furniture castor has a wheel or roller of plastic material with a cushion adjacent the periphery and a relatively hard thin peripheral floor-engaging portion supported by and flexing with the cushion, the floor-engaging portion having a smooth surface to enable the castor to slip on a carpet or rug. As shown, the wheel may have an interior part 14 of hard rubber encircled by a zone 17 of soft rubber with a thin periphery 18 of rubber slightly less hard than the interior 14. The periphery 18 may be formed by a flexible skin vulcanized to the soft rubber 17 or may be formed by hardening the surface of the soft rubber by a halogen. The periphery is given a smooth, glazed, surface to minimize wear of the fabric when used on a carpet. When under full load, the wheel deforms and engages the supporting surface over an extended area thus avoiding denting of the surface when this is in the nature of linoleum.
