Abstract
549,389. Gramophones. SHAW, M. N. H. April 16, 1941, No. 4941. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] In apparatus for playing a sound record by means of a gramophone sound box or pick-up device, a counting device is provided to indicate the number of times the reproducing needle has been used. The counter comprises a ratchet wheel 1, Figs. 1 and 2, an actuating pawl 3, a holding pawl 4 for retaining the wheel in adjusted position, and a releasing means 5 arranged to move the under pawl against the outer pawl thereby to release both pawls to permit the wheel to return to initial zero position under the action of a restoring spring 2. The device is mounted on a base plate 7 which is secured to the motor board of the gramophone. A spindle 14 on the base plate carries a spacing washer 15, a lever 16 carrying the actuating pawl, a flange 1 integral with the spindle, a hub 18 to which the ratchet wheel 1 and spring 2 are secured, and a retaining spring washer 19. The lever 16 is formed with a projection 25 bearing on the base plate, and is connected by a slip coupling or other lost motion device 27 to the tone arm. Movement of the lever 16 is controlled by a spring 28 and is limited by lugs 29, 30 arranged to engage the sides of the base plate 7. The release lever 5 is rotatably mounted on a boss 32 and is rocked by a flattened portion 39 on the spindle 40 when the knob 6 is turned. Indications 46 on the ratchet wheel 1 are viewable through an aperture 48 and a warning indication such as a red patch 49 is exhibited when the needle should be changed. The ratchet wheel 1 is formed with a mutilated toothed portion 50 that further actuation is prevented when the limit has been reached. The ratchet wheel 1 on reaching this position may be provided with means arranged to open the circuit of the gramophone driving motor or to actuate a device preventing operation of the machine.
