Abstract

549,255. Coating wires. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO. & SMITHS, Ltd., WILDY, E. L., and SANDS, A. J. Aug. 5, 1941, No. 9957. [Class 140] A die for regulating the thickness of viscous coatings applied to wires or the like comprises an inverted cup 14 having a substantially conical interior and an orifice at its apex, supported so that it can centralize itself on the wire. A pipe 33 supplies viscous coating material by an opening 35 to a pool the level of which is determined by an adjustable plate 37. The wire 30 is engaged in a groove in a block 23 by compressed cork secured to a block 24. these blocks being of compressed fibre impregnated with synthetic resin. The die is loosely supported by radial arms engaging slots in a bracket 42. As the wire travels upwardly the pressure of the coating fluid on the cone centralises the wire in its orifice. The level of the fluid may be just above the arms carrying the die.
