Abstract

548,766. De-icing aircraft. JAMESON, R. W. July 9, 1941, No. 8635. Addition to 536,343. [Class 4] A flow and return system for de-icing aircraft as described in the parent Specification has means for closing the outlets from and inlets to the heating chamber so as to isolate the heated air in the circulating system whenever the exhaust cooling air inlets are open, and conversely for opening the outlets and inlets of the circulating system when the cooling air inlets are closed. The action may be manual or under the automatic control of a thermostat. Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically an automatic system in which inlet and outlet passages 1, 2 for the cooling air are controlled by slide valve 7, 8 and the outlet and inlet passages 3, 4 for the circulating air are controlled by slide valves 16, 17. The valves 7, 8 are closed by solenoids 9, 10 in an electric circuit 13 and the valves 16, 17 by solenoids 14, 15 in the same circuit, the valves being returned to initial position by the springs shown. A circulating fan 20 is driven by a motor 20a when the circuit 13 in closed. A thermostat 21 in the circulating pipes closes the circuit 13 when the temperature of the heated air falls below the required level and re-opens the circuit when the temperature has been raised sufficiently. A manual control switch 22 is provided in the circuit 13. A modification is described in which the valves for the cooling air are controlled hydraulically, the control valve for the pressure fluid being coupled to butterfly valves in the heated air circuit. Heated air from other sources such as a radiator may be used and the cooling air for the radiator controlled in conjunction with air passages from the radiator chamber to the heated air distribution system so that when heated air is being taken from the radiator chamber the cooling air openings will be shut, and conversely. The necessary valves would be worked in conjunction with those already described.
