Abstract

545,079. flexible couplings. MANGANESE BRONZE & BRASS CO., Ltd., RUBBER BINDERS, Ltd., and WHITTINGHAM, C. Sept. 7, 1940, No. 13993. [Class 80 (ii)] A resilient power transmission coupling comprises a ring or annulus of resilient material located between and bonded to metal elements adapted to be connected respectively to driving and driven elements and having additional resilient material normally unstressed but through which the drive will be transmitted with the resilient material under compression should said ring or annulus become ruptured or its resistance to shear overcome. A disc a is secured to one of the elements to be coupled and, an annular member b to the other element. Another annular member c is rigidly connected by distance pieces e, Figs. 2, 3 to the member b, and the two members and the disc are connected by rubber or other resilient material d bonded or otherwise secured thereto. Elongated notches f are formed in the periphery of the disc a and are lined with rubber or other resilient material g which provides resilient abutments for the distance pieces should the main resilient material d become ruptured or overstressed. The material d may be of progressively increasing thickness outwards, as shown, or may be of uniform thickness. The distance pieces have enlarged ends secured by set-screws to the annular members to prevent relative movement thereof. In a modification, the single disc a is replaced by two or more discs spaced apart by hollow spacing .members. Further, in order to increase the shear resistance of the resilient material an additional annular member is provided between the discs and the resilient material bonded to opposite faces thereof. The distance pieces may be secured to the annular members, by a bolt passing therethrough and, where the coupling is employed for driving only in one direction, the distance pieces, as shown in Fig. 10, may be positioned towards one side or lateral edge of each notch instead of being normally at the middle thereof. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the distance pieces are formed integrally with a metal band i extending around the periphery of the coupling and situated between and engaging recesses in the marginal edges of the annular members the band being secured by bolts extending through the distant pieces. The resilient lining may be formed as a continuous strip l extending over the peripheral portions of the disc and forming a resilient sealing for the band. In a still further modification the band is formed of channel section and in segments.
