Abstract
543,364. Packaging. WILLIAMS, V. G., GRANGE, E. R., and DELAMERE, R. D. Aug. 14, 1940, No. 12980. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for packaging articles, particularly for making and filling tea bags and providing them with tags. comprises a rotary hopper with measuring chambers, a number of nozzles which receive charges of material from the measuring chambers, means for forming a strip of fabric into bags to receive material from une nozzles, and means for separating the bags and sewing them along their sides and mouths. The machine comprises an endless chain 2 passing in a horizontal path around two sprocket wheels 3c, 3d journalled at opposite ends of a bridge 3 that supports the chain, the sprocket 3c being secured to a driven shaft 3e. Grippers 4 are mounted on the chain in such a manner that they can be swung in a vertical plane and rotate in an horizontal plane, and they are opened and closed periodically. Nozzles 28 are mounted on a second chain 22 which passes around a sprocket wheel, secured to the shaft 3e, and an idler sprocket 24. During part of the movement, each nozzle is coaxial with a gripper 4, and is moved vertically on its carrier by a cam so that it is lowered into a gripper and then raised from it while they are coaxial. Bag-making fabric 9a is drawn from a roll 9c through the open grippers and folded longitudinally into V-shape. The folded material receives the descending nozzles and is clamped around them by the closing of the grippers. The latter then pass beneath a spout 21. to receive filling material, such as tea, from a hopper 8 secured to the shaft 3e. The hopper is provided with measuring chambers 8f, Fig. 4, which communicate one by one with the spout 21 and deliver into it a measured quantity of tea. In order to maintain a pre-determined level of tea in the hopper, the tea is received from a spout 8v which is,closed by a pivoted plate 8w. The free end of the plate carries a plate 8z adapted to be engaged by the tea in the rotating hopper, and is moved by the tea to keep the spout 8v closed. If the level of the tea falls below the plate 8z, a spring swings the plate 8w aside and opens the spout 8v to admit more tea to the hopper. A knife 11, Fig. 2, severs the fabric between adjacent closed grippers to form bag sections 9 each of which is carried by a gripper. After filling, a nozzle is raised out of a bag section and this is carried by the gripper past or sewing machines 15, 15a, 15b, 15c, Fig. 1, which trim and sew the sides and mouth of the bag section, and also attach a tag 17, Fig. 18. The tags are fed to and sewn into the stitching which is then cut between adjacent bag sections. Finally, each gripper is opened and turned through a right angle, and the bag is removed by a rotary clamping-device 34 and dropped on to a conveyer 20.
