[Class 107] [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for preparing and laying on roads a surfacing material consisting of textile material covered with a bituminous material, comprises a roll of textile material adapted to be unwound by the movement of a vehicle on which the apparatus is mounted a container for the bituminous material and means for displacing the container laterally on the vehicle for laying adjacent strips of the completed material. The vehicle carries a container e for mastic or other bituminous material supplied from a cooker c by a transverse shoot d<SP>1</SP> which is centrally pivoted so as to conduct the material to the container in either of its lateral positions. Jute from a roll g carried by arms h on the.container is led over a squirrel cage device k in the container, between mangle rollers l, l<SP>1</SP> that are adjustable to regulate the thickness of the mastic on the upper surface of the jute and over a scraper m that removes surplus mastic from the lower surface of the jute. The end of the prepared material is anchored to the ground and unwinding is effected by movement of the vehicle. The container is supported by rollers y that run on guides x on the frame b so that after a strip has been laid it can be moved laterally by a rope q wound on a pair of winches one of which is shown at o, to a position in which an adjacent strip can be laid by reversing the vehicle. The arms h can be turned downwardly about a pivot j for mounting a fresh roll.
