Abstract

541,988. Valves. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and PONTING, R. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31061. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXI] Relates to rotary valves for controlling the passage of liquid to reversible hydraulic motors as used, e.g., in training and elevating guns mounted in aircraft turrets. Acording to the invention, the valve barrel 21, Fig. 4, is rotatable in a casing having two ports 25, 26 leading to the motor and a third port 27 or 28 for delivery of liquid to or discharge from the motor ports, and the valve barrel or the surrounding wall is formed with a conduit 36 or 37, Fig. 5, of high resistance. The arrangement is such that, upon rotation of the valve to or from its mid position, the effective length of one of the conduits is increased and the other decreased thus permitting of fine adjustment of the gun. As shown, deep grooves 22, 23 provide the valve with negative lap and the conduits 36, 37 are formed by narrow slits in the grooves. The spindles 35 of the valves for controlling elevation and training are as shown in Fig. 2, connected by arms and ball-jointed links to a single control lever 18 ball jointed at 19 to the valve casing.
