Abstract
538,374. Sulphonylhalides ; wetting &c. agents. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE-PEET CO. Jan. 30, 1940, No. 1828. Convention date, June 29, 1939. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group III] Sulphonylhalides such as are obtained by the action of sulphur dioxide and halogen on paraffins, olefines, alcohols, aliphatic carboxylic acids and the corresponding cycloaliphathic derivatives are purified by treating them with liquid sulphur dioxide, separating the sulphur dioxide phase and removing the sulphur dioxide. Solvents insoluble in the sulphur dioxide may also be added to facilitate the extraction of the impurities such as hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons. Such solvents are paraffins having four to nine carbon atoms in the molecule. Ethyl, methyl and butyl sulphates may be added to the liquid sulphur dioxide. The purified sulphohalides on hydrolysis yield sulphonates of improved efficiency as wetting, emulsifying and equalizing agents which may be used in association with soap, rosinates, higher alcohol sulphates, monoglyceride sulphates, mineral oil sulphonates, Turkey red oil, lecithin, glycerolamines, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, sodium phosphate, borax, tetraphosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, hexametaphosphoric acid, and alkalimetal, ammonia and amine salts of the said phosphorus acids. Alkyl esters, dyes, lakes, pigments, silica, pumice, feldspar, chalk, infusional earth, bentonite, talc, starch, carbontetrachloride, trichlorethylene, glycerol, glycol, alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, phenol, cyclohexanol, tetrahydronaphthalene, pine oil, mineral oils, perfumes, deodorants, fats, oils, fatty acids, monoglycerides, vitamins, waxes, gums, glue, resins, phenolmercurychloride, phenylmercurynitrate, hydroxybenzoicmethylester, mercurychloride and aluminium chloride may also be added, as well as sodium sulphate, chloride, acetate, bicarbonate, hypochlorite, thiosulphate, hydrosulphite, and the corresponding ammonium and potassium salts. Sulphur dioxide soluble auxiliary substances such as petroleum sulphonic acid may be added during the purification process. In examples, sulphochlorides obtained from paraffin wax and cetylalcohol by treatment with sulphur dioxide and chlorine are purified, hexane being used as well as liquid sulphur dioxide for the extraction. The products may be used in washing agents, germicides, insecticides, cements, abrasives, antiseptics, water softeners, disinfectants, water paints, polishes, sizes, glues, tooth and mouth detergents, laundry blueing, dyeing, lubricating and discharging compositions, depilatories, dustpreventing compositions, fire extinguishers, drain, and radiator cleaners, anti-freezing, antifogging and anti-corrosion compositions, electrolytic baths, etching and photographic solutions, cosmetics, shampoos, hair lotions, tanning agents, fat liquors, paint, stain and grease removers, dry cleaners, fat splitting agents, petroleum de-emulsifiers, plasticizers and resins.
