Abstract
538,353. Hydrocarbons. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., and GRIFFITH, R. H. Jan. 27, 1940, Nos. 27437/39 and 135/41. [Class 2 (iii.)] Olefines are obtained by treating an aldehyde or ketone at raised temperature with hydrogen in an amount in excess of that theoretically necessary for the production of the olefine, in the presence of a de-oxygenating catalyst consisting of a compound, e.g. an oxide or sulphide, of vanadium, tungsten, or molybdenum. Temperatures of 300‹ to 500‹C. are employed, and the conditions are preferably such that some of the aldehyde or ketone remains unchanged. The catalyst may be employed in powdered form or as granules or deposited on a carrier, e.g. alumina. In examples the following compounds are hydrogenated in the presence of a molybdenum oxide catalyst: (1) dipropyl ketone, to yield a mixture of heptenes, together with some heptanol-4, n-heptane and methylhexane, (2) acetophenone to yield styrene, (3) butyric aldehyde to yield normal butylene, (4) mesityl oxide to yield 4-methylpentadiene-1 : 3, and (5) crotonaldehyde to yield butadiene 1:2.
