Abstract

535,268. Endless-track vehicles. LOYD, V. G., and SALMON, N. Jan. 1, 1940, No. 70. [Class 79 (i)] An endless - track vehicle is provided with two separate and independent power and transmission units either or both of which can drive the vehicle, and each unit driving the track sprockets at opposite ends of the vehicle. In the construction shown each unit comprises a radiator 10, an engine 2, gear-box 3, torque-tube 4, differential gear 5 and axle tubes 6 preferably of ordinary motor vehicle construction, one of the axle units being turned upside down so that both units drive the tracks 7 in the same direction. Brake drums 8 ,and driving sprockets 9 are provided on the axles, and steering may be effected by differential braking as described in Specification 529,353. The engines may be arranged symmetrically on the centre line of the vehicle as shown, or so that the centre of gravity is forward or aft, or both units may be arranged on either side of the' centre line. The vehicle is provided with load rollers 11 and tensioning rollers 12, or the tracks may be tensioned by moving the sprockets 9.
