Abstract

533,910. Refractory substances; rendering porous. TITANIUM ALLOY MANUFACTURING CO. April 24, 1939, No. 9939. Convention date, April 26, 1938. [Classes 22 and 70] A porous, insulating, refractory substance is made by firing a mixture of zircon, a binding agent and a substance such as petroleum coke which is burned out on firing. The coke is added in particles larger than those of the zircon. The binding-agent may be a double silicate of zirconium and a metal of groups 1 to 3 or a zirconate of these metals ; or oxides of zirconium, thorium, titanium or tin. Phosphoric acid may be used alone or together with the other binding agents and is removed by volatilization on firing 2400‹F. or over. Green strength is obtained by use of an organic binder such as gelatine solution and the coke is folded in after the other ingredients have been intimately mixed.
