Abstract

533,027. Fastenings operated by fluid pressure. HAYNES, L. L., and STANTON, R. S. Aug. 3, 1939, No. 22490. [Class 44] A bolt of the kind retracted by spring and shot by fluid pressure comprises a bolt 5 mounted in an extension 2a of a cylinder 2 in which a piston 1 slides, a rod 4 on the piston slidably engaging in a bore in the bolt. A spring 7 retracts the piston and a weaker spring 8 retracts the bolt, the pressure applied to the piston being transmitted through spring 7 to both bolt and spring 8. The arrangement allows a door to be fastened by slamming after the bolt has been shot. As shown, pressure is supplied from a pump 11 driven from a sprocket 12 as described in Specification 533,028, [Group XXVIII]. Pressure fluid is supplied through duct 14a, control valve 13, and duct 3 to cylinder 2. The valve comprises a piston 14 urged to the left by spring 15 so that ,when the pump supply ceases, an annular duct 16 exhausts duct 3 through duct 17. When pressure is applied, piston 14 is urged to the right to cut off exhaust and connect ducts 14a, 3. Other pressure supply arrangements may be used, and more than one bolt may be operated from the same pressure source, for example for locking railway carriage doors.
