Abstract
532,343. Treating textile fabrics. HERCULES POWDER CO. July 31, 1939, Nos. 22185 and 22186. Convention dates, Aug. 5, 1938, and June 23,1939. [Class 15 (ii)] A substantially permanent finish is imparted to textile fabrics by treating them with a medium containing a polyhydric alcohol ester of a rosin, said ester having a melting point within the range of 25‹C.-100‹C., and preferably within the range of 35 C.-70‹C. The ester may be applied as a solution in an organic solvent, or as an aqueous emulsion, and any of the usual textile finishing materials, such as starches, gums, talc and softeners, may be present. After treatment, excess treating liquid may be removed from the fabric, and the latter dried at elevated temperature. In preparing the rosin esters, wood rosin, gum rosin, hydrogenated rosin or the acids from such rosins, e.g. abietic acid, pimaric acid and sapinic acid may be employed, and specified polyhydric alcohols for esterifying the rosins are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, glycerol, diglycerol, or mixtures thereof. In the preparation of emulsions of the rosin esters, emulsifying agents such as sodium oleate, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine stearate, Duponol, Nekal 3A, or Aresklene 400, may be used, and the emulsions may be stabilized by homogenization or by the addition of such stabilizing agents as sulphonated castor oil, methyl cellulose, gelatin or gum arabic. Numerous examples are given.
