Abstract
531,673. Purifying cellulose ethers. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH- (Hercules Powder Co.). July 28, 1939, No. 22024. [Class 2 (ii)] Cellulose ethers in solid form are washed with an aqueous solution of a lower fatty acid, i.e. formic to butyric, containing about 0.05 to 0.5 per cent. of acid, excess fatty acid and watersoluble matter being removed by washing with water. Specified ethers are ethyl and benzyl cellulose, and specified acids are formic, acetic, and propionic acids. In examples, (1) crude ethyl cellulose is washed with water of pH 9, then with acetic acid of 0.054 per cent. strength, and finally with water of pH 7.9 to 8.3 ; (2) water-wet ethyl cellulose is steeped for 2 hours in 0.5 per cent. aqueous formic acid or 0.15 per cent. propionic acid, and then washed with water of pH 7.
