Abstract

529,571. Honing- and lapping-machines. BURGESS, A. F. (Barnes Drill Co.). Oct. 25, 1939, No. 28653. [Class 60] A honing or lapping machine, having tool and work supports and power-operated means for reciprocating one of these supports, is provided with two control elements 41, 42, rotatable about a common axis, of which 42 is rocked in synchronism with the reciprocation of the one support 13 and 41 controls the direction of said reciprocation, the elements 41, 42 carrying stops or the like which, after the actuation of a starting switch or the like, effect reciprocation through a number of working strokes and then through a greater distance to separate the tool from the work. The work table 15 is adjustable and the hone 21 is carried by a sliding head 13 which has a projection 58 connected to a chain 55 which engages a gear 56 of the element 42. When a starting switch 81, Fig. 3, is closed a relay R1 is energized to close switches R12, R11 thereby starting motors M, for rotating the hone, and M1, for rotating a pump P supplying pressure fluid to valve V1, V2, V3. The valve V1 causes a piston 31 and the head 13 to descend, the first resultant clock-wise movement of the element 42 causing a stop 60, Figs. 4, 5, thereon to release a spring closed switch LS, thus keeping the relay Rl energized although switch S1 is released, and starting a device TM which, after any desired period, closes a switch TS. When the hone enters the work a stop 61 on the element 42 closes a switch LS1 to energize a relay R2 thus closing a switch R21, which keeps it energized, and switches R22, R23, which energize a solenoid SOL1 to move a valve V2 to the right thus causing a piston 24 to move down and expand the hone. Then a stop 85, Fig. 4, having passed, by depressing, a pawl 86 carried by a bracket 83 adjustable on the element 41, engages a stop 82 thereon and turns the element 41 and its shaft 68 so that a lever 75 thereon reverses the switch V3 and thus the switch V1 and the movement of the piston 31, head 13 and element 42. When the stop 85 reaches the pawl 86 in the reverse direction it engages it and turns the element 41 and valve V3 back into their original positions so that the head 13 is again moved down. This reciprocation is continued until the timing device, TM closes the switch TS thus energizing relay R3 to open a switch R31 and thus, by breaking the current through relay R2, switches R22, R23 which allow a spring s to move the valve V2 into the position shown and thus contract the hone. The relay R3 also closes switches R32, R33 to energize a solenoid SOL2 which acting through a lever 99, spring-returned rod 94, and collar 92 depresses the pawl 86 clear of the path of the stop 85 so that this continues until, after the hone has been withdrawn from the work, it engages a stop 81 on element 41 and thus returns the valve V3 to the position shown while the stop 60 on element 42 opens the switch LS and stops the motors M, M1. A switch S2, Fig. 3, is provided for operating the machine as long as it is held down and a switch S3 for stopping it at any time. A handle 77, Fig. 1, is provided for operating the valve V3. The stops 60, 61 81 and 82 are adjustable. A guide 22a is provided for the hone as it enters the work.
