Abstract

526,159. Vehicle bodies. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. March 9, 1939, No. 7673. Convention date, March 9, 1938. [Class 108 (i)] A vehicle body comprises an outer skin of elastic synthetic resinous material connected at spaced points to rib-like frame members secured to the floor or chassis of the vehicle. As shown the body framefork comprises transverse members 5, 7, 11 connected together and to the wheel casing parts 12, 13 by longitudinal members 14, 15, the members 5, 7, 11 supporting respectively the windscreen part 6, side wall parts 8, 9, and rear part 10 of the outer skin. The members 5, 7 are mounted in sockets 4 welded to the floor 3 the sides of which are formed as box-section chassis frame members 1, 2. In a modification the sockets 4 are dispensed with and the lower ends of the frame members are inserted in the box-section frame members and welded thereto. The parts 6, 8, 9, 10 of the outer skin and also the roof 16, in the case of a saloon type body, are composed e.g. of a pressing or pressings of a laminated synthetic resinous substance in which the layers are formed by fibrous materials saturated in synthetic resin and pressed into the desired shape. A rubber cushion 17, Fig. 2, separates the tubular member 7 and the part 8 of the outer skin which are connected by spaced clips 18 having elongated slots engaged by studs 20 on the part 8. Figs. 6, 7 show further kinds of frame-members and modified ways of securing them to the outer skin. The frame member 30, Fig. 6, is substantially semi-circular in section and is separated from connected flanges 28, 29 on the side and rear parts 8, 10 of the outer skin by a resilient buffer 31 and connected thereto by a clip 32 passing through aligned holes in the flanges. The web 33 of the T-section frame member, Fig. 7, extends between the flanges on the parts 8, 10 the screw 27 connecting the flanges passing through an annular rubber buffer 35 secured in the web 33.
