Abstract

523,226. Operating friction clutches. ALEXANDER, E. S. Dec. 29, 1938, No. 37710. [Class 80 (ii)] A pulley b to be driven carries a conically surfaced replaceable clutch block c adapted to be engaged by a corresponding surface on a pulley a driven by a belt. The two pulleys are held in or out of engagement by a spring blade d secured to the pulley a, the free end of the blade engaging faces e or f on a sleeve g. This sleeve, which is free on a spindle i to which the pulley b is secured, carries the pulley a and has a pin-and-slot engagement therewith. Integral with the pulley a is a disc j having opposed conical faces j<1>, j'. A lever m mounted on a spindle n and actuated by a handle q, has two arms carrying respectively a friction block r and a roller v adapted to engage opposite faces of the disc. The block r is of asbestos or asbestos and cotton impregnated and bonded with synthetic resin. By pressing the block r against the face j<1> the pulley a is slowed down to reduce shock on engagement, and then moved to the right to engage the surface c. The clutch is disengaged by pressing on the surface j<2> by the roller v. A coiled spring acts upon the lever m to keep the block r out of contact during driving.
