Abstract
521,056. Moulding typewriter keys &c. WINDSOR, R. H. Nov. 12, 1938, No. 32945. [Class 87 (ii)] In making parti-coloured articles such as keys for typewriters, calculating machines &c., or dials for automatic telephones, having figures, characters, or designs in one colour on a background of a different colour, a preliminary moulding is made in one colour of the figure &c. which is to constitute the inlay, and subsequently a material of a different colour is moulded around the preliminary moulding to form the background. In making keys for typewriters, the characters are formed by injecting thermoplastic material, such as cellulose acetate, into a two-part mould to form a set of characters 20, Fig. 1, connected to branches 21 leading to a solidified stalk 22. The mould has ejecting pins and projections for forming recesses 26, Fig. 9, in the under side of the characters and for producing apertures 24, Fig. 5, in those parts of characters which enclose a space, e.g., as in the figure " 4." The characters are detached from the branches and stalks and are held by projections in a second mould engaging in the recesses 26. Plastic material 30, 25, Fig. 9, is then injected around the characters to form the background. The branches and stalks of the second moulding operation are then removed from the finished keys. A dial for an automatic telephone is made by moulding the characters 42, Fig. 11, upstanding from a ring 40 having a rearwardly projecting solidified stalk. The stalk is removed, and the ring is supported by projections in a second mould into which thermoplastic material of a different colour is injected to form the body of the dial, the supporting projections producing recesses on the back of the dial.
