519,119. Bituminous compositions. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO.. Sept. 15, 1938, Nos. 26934 and 26935. Convention dates, Sept. 15,1937, and Jan. 26,1938. [Class 22] The adhesivity of bituminous binders comprising a bituminous material and a solvent, or a bituminous emulsion, is increased by heating the bituminous material, or. the solvent, or the mixture of bituminous material and solvent, with an oxide of lead, iron, aluminium, copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, nickel or tin. The bituminous material and the solvent usually contain acids, eg. naphthenic acids, which react with the metal oxide to form a metal soap. If insufficient acid is present, acid or acid containing material is added before 'the treatment with the oxide. Examples of suitable additions are oleic and naphthenic acids, phenols, and industrial products containing phenols, eg. tars and pitches. Instead of adding acids, these may be formed in situ by oxidation, e.g. by blowing with air at a temperature of 150‹-250‹C., before or during the heating with oxide.
