Abstract

516,115. Ascorbic acid. STEVENS, A. H. (Pfizer & Co., C.). June 14, 1938, No. 17642. [Class 2 (iii)] Laevo-ascorbic acid is produced by dis-. solving 2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid or a readilyhydrolyzable derivative thereof in glacial acetic acid, concentrated phosphoric acid or - concentrated sulphuric acid, adding at least two gram-equivalents per litre of a non-oxidizing .acid stronger than phosphoric acid, and heating. Suitable non-oxidizing acids are hydrochloric, hydrobromic and sulphuric acids. Sulphuric acid can therefore be used for both functions. After the reaction the mineral acid is removed as soon as possible. When acetic - acid is employed as solvent a considerable amount of esterification occurs, and hydrolysis is therefore effected by boiling with alcohols. In examples (1) 2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid is heated to 90-95‹ C. with glacial acetic acid and hydrochloric acid ; diacetone-2-keto-laevogulonic acid 'is heated with (2) glacial acetic acid and hydrochloric acid ; (3) concentrated sulphuric acid and glacial acetic acid ; and (4) concentrated sulphuric acid. After removal of acid, the ascorbic acid is recrystallized from methyl alcohol. Specification 428,815 is referred to.
