Abstract
515,525. Electron multipliers ; thermionic cathodes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 31, 1938, No. 16243. Convention date, June 23, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron multiplier used to amplify small currents the. thermionic cathode works at a temperature of between 100-150C. and the grid has a space charge control ; one arrangement uses perforated secondary emitting electrodes with intermediate focussing cylinders. The cathode comprises a hollow soldered box 1, Fig. 4, of silver, provided with the usual oxidized and caesiated surface, and internally heated by a wire, e.g. of ferro-nickel, wound on a mica former 4. Further mica insulating plates 6 are provided on each side of the heater. Alternatively, the heating elements may be graphite rods. The emissive layer may be mounted on an insulating coating on a nickel layer which acts as a resistance heater, or may be on moulded insulating plates 8, 8<1>, Fig. 8, mounted back to back with the heating elements 5 between them. A solid insulating coated cathode may be cylindrical in form with an axial heater. Gold or other similar metals may be used and the coating may be rubidium or sodium ; the metal surface may be roughened by sand-blasting.
