Abstract
514,480. Coating-compositions. OXVAR, Ltd. (Oxford Varnish Corporation). April 8, 1938, No. 10744. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] In the production of coating-compositions a paste of light reflecting metallic particles is mixed with a carrier substance containing a volatile solvent, and after thorough mixing, the heavier metal particles' are allowed to settle and the supernatant liquid containing the finer particles is decanted or otherwise removed from the sediment. The carrier may be a lacquer gum in a volatile solvent, or an oil varnish, or there may be used a mixture of mineral spirits and a high-flash naphtha. After the heavier particles have, been separated, the suspension may be mixed with other vehicles, pigments, dyes, or other materials to form the final coating composition. The metal pigments may be aluminium flakes or bronze powder. The particles may have an average flake' particle area of not more than 5 x 10<-7> sq. cm. In an example, aluminium flake is mixed with mineral, spirits and high flash naphtha, and the heavier particles are then allowed to settle. The suspension is then mixed with a xylene solution of a lacquer gum or a phenol-modified alkyd resin.' For use the solution may be diluted to a spraygun consistency by adding mineral spirits and high-flash naphtha. After the composition has been applied to a surface, there may be applied a clear lacquer so as to give the surface a subdued iridescent appearance. The metallic coating may be used as a ground. coating for overlying wood grain designs, marble and other effects. Specification 514,479, [Group IV], is referred to.
