Abstract
513,105. Petroleum distillates ; antioxidants. TRINIDAD LEASEHOLDS, Ltd., HENE, E., and BERRY; A. G. V. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 35967. [Class 91] The water-soluble bodies retained in the aqueous layer arising from the acidification of the used alkaline wash liquors of petroleum. refining are used for preventing or retarding changes attributed to oxidation and polymer-- ization in mineral, animal and vegetable oils. The compounds may be introduced into the oil by intimately mixing it with the appropriate quantity of the aqueous material or, alternatively, they may be first extracted from the aqueous material by means of organic' solvents relatively insoluble in water, for example, higher alcohols, and then added to the oils with or without the removal of the solvents. In the examples (1) pressure distillate is treated with 2 per cent. by volume of an 8 per cent. caustic soda solution which is then carbonated with flue gas. The oily layer is removed and the aqueous layer used as an inhibitor for the purposes indicated'; (2) pressure distillate is treated with 2 per cent. by volume of a 4 per cent. caustic soda solution until the aqueous solution is neutral whereby 20 per cent. of the inhibitors remain in the hydrocarbon ; the inhibitors in the aqueous liquor may be recovered by acidification and extraction.
