Abstract

512,329. Turning projectiles. HEPBURN, J. T. March 8, 1938, No. 7230. Convention date, May 10, 1937. [Class 83 (iii)] In a lathe adapted particularly for machining the bases of shells and at the same time bringing them to the desired weight, an excess weight indicating disc 55 is fixed to a screwed spindle 53, carried by a bearing on the lathe bed, to which is attached a fixed indicator 56 adjacent which graduations on the indicating disc move, and an adjustable stop 51 is carried by the tool saddle for co-operation with the spindle 53 of the indicating disc. After the shell has been positioned in the lathe chuck a stop 57 on the cross-slide 59 is brought up against the base of the shell, the indicating disc 55 is turned to the zero position and the adjustable stop 51 on the saddle adjusted to contact with the spindle 53 of the indicating disc. The saddle is next retracted and the indicator 55 turned until a graduation corresponding to the excess weight marking, previously stamped on the shell, is adjacent a mark " R," Fig. 5, on the fixed disc. 56. When the stop 51 on the saddle is brought up to the end of the spindle 53 the saddle will then be in the correct position for taking a roughing cut and recessing the shell base by tools in the holder 58. A similar adjustment is 'then made but this time using the mark " F " on the fixed portion of the indicator, this enables the saddle to be set so that finishing tools in the cross slide complete the machining of the shell-base and at the same time bring the shell to its correct weight. Chucks.-The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes a description of the lathe chuck and its actuating mechanism but, this now comprises the subject matter of Specification 512,399 and does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
