[Class 106 (ii)] An impact-testing machine comprises a liquid filled cylinder 23 with plunger and a pressure gauge 28 so arranged in relation to inclined rail means 22 that a weight 36 on wheels when run down the rail subjects the body 34 to. an impact which is transmitted to the cylinder liquid, the pressure induced being read off on the gauge. The cylinder 23 is fixed at the lower end of the rails 22 and is connected to a plunger guide 24 by a beam 25 from which is suspended a plunger support 26 which grips the plunger 27. The test weight 36 has wheels 37 and a striking head 38, a coupling part 39 being provided at its other end. A tractor 40 is provided with a hook coupling 41 pivoted to the front axle and adapted to engage the hole 43. A self-acting lever 44 pivots about the rear axle of the tractor, a projecting portion 46 being connected to the lever 41. When the lower end 47 of lever 44 engages a cam stop 48 on the track the coupling rod 41 is rotated to disengage the weight which runs down the rails and engages the guided rod 32 between which and the plunger of cylinder 23 the buffer 34 to be tested is arranged on a rest. The coupling may also be operated by a handle 51 pivoted on the back axle and engaging a projection on the self-acting lever. A wire rope from a lifting winch 54 is attached to the carriage. The speed of the weight at striking may be measured by an electric speedometer. An indicator is connected to the cylinder 23 by. pipes so that a plunger moves in the cylinder according to the pressure induced in cylinder 23 and by a parallel linkage a pen is moved over a chart on a drum given rotational movements in accordance with the vibrations of the buffer. For testing a beam a double cylinder type may be used.
