Abstract
506,807. Softening water; vitamins; manures. TRIGGS, W. W. (Ellis-Foster Co.) Dec. 3, 1937, No.. 33471. [Classes 46 and 111] [Also in Group IV] Base-exchange materials are obtained by treating water-soluble tannin-like wood extracts in concentrated or dried form with dehydrating, strongly acid agents until they are rendered insoluble. The product is washed and, optionally, dried, ground and graded, for use.. Chestnut extract, sulphited or unsutphited quebracho, cutch, hemlock extract and waste cellulose sulphite liquors are suitable wood extracts. Sulphuric acid, oleum, sulphonic acid, phosphoric acid, phosphoric anhydride, fluosilicic acid, chlor-sulphonic acid, and acid sludge from petroleum refining are suitable dehydrating agents. The preferred temperature range for the reaction is from 50 to 100‹ C. and the reaction is stopped by cooling the mass and pouring it into a large volume of water. The base-exchange capacity of the product is increased by successive exhaustion by hard water and regeneration by means of acid or soluble salt. It, is stated that the products are useful as fertilizers and for concentrating vitamins.
