Abstract
501,020. Wetting &c. agents; making emulsions. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WHITTAKER, C. M., and WILCOCK, C. C. Aug. 18, 1937, No. 22674. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group III] Compositions useful as wetting or cleansing agents in the treatment of textiles, or as emulsifying agents, are manufactured. by mixing a solution of a natural resin in caustic alkali solution with an aqueous solution of a quaternary ammonium salt in which the nitrogen atom forms part of a heterocyclic ring and in which there is an alkyl chain of at least six carbon atoms, e.g. dodecyl, hexadecyl and octodecyl pyridinium halides and sulphates. The products may also be used -for the pretreatment of cellulose textile materials to promote the absorption of acid wool dyestuffs and to increase the fastness of these dyes on the fibre. In an example, an aqueous solution of octodecyl pyridinium bromide is mixed with a solution of colophony in caustic soda solution. Quaternary ammonium salts of the type defined are obtained by reacting a tertiary heterocyclic base, e.g. pyridine, quinoline or their homologues, with an alkyl halide containing at least six carbon atoms or with a higher alcohol and a concentrated halogen hydracid.
