Abstract

500,354. Evacuated sealed containers for medical preparations. SHARP & DOHME, Inc. June 1, 1937, No. 15262. Convention date, July 10, 1936. [Class 81. (i)] Desiccated biologically active substances such as sera, bacterial cultures, glandular preparations and the like, and in particular such substances as have been dried whilst frozen, as described in Specification 450,147, are preserved under vacuum in a glass container 10 closed by a perforable self-sealing stopper 14 and having its neck 12 sealed by fusion so as to enclose the stopper. The frozen material 11 is desiccated by the application of vacuum through the neck 12, the vacuum is then released, the stopper 14 inserted, the container re-evacuated through a needle 16 passed through the stopper, and thereafter the neck sealed at 18, preferably whilst the portion of the neck beyond the stopper is under vacuum. In use the sealed neck is broken away and water is introduced from a hypodermic syringe through the stopper 14 so as to make intimate contact with and dissolve the material 11 whilst this is still under vacuum. Specification 500,255 also is referred to.
