Abstract

497,195. Actuation of switches; control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 6, 1938, No. 10538. Convention date, April 6, 1937. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v)] A switch responsive to the direction of rotation of a shaft 14 is operated by the limited rotary displacement of a coaxial shaft 22 which is yieldably, coupled, e.g. by a magnetic coupling to the shaft 14. The shaft 22 carries an aluminium member 18 movable in the gap between a magnet 17 and a magnetic field member 21. The members 17, 21 rotate with the shaft 14 so that the shaft 22 tends to follow them. The shaft 22 carries a crank 19 having a pin 33 which is embraced bv two levers 36, 37 pressed towards each other by springs 34, 35. The levers also embrace a stop 40 and thus tend to hold the crank 19 in the central position shown in Fig. 2. When the shaft 14 rotates, the force acting on the shaft 22 causes the crank 19 to move in one direction or the other and the pin 33, which moves in a slot 32 in another lever 28, operates the lever 28 to bring a contact arm 26 into engagement with a contact 30 or 31. The invention is specially applicable to electric motors which are brought quickly to rest by reversing the connections, the above switch serving to disconnect the motor immediately it has come to rest and before it reverses. Specification 424,746, [Group II], is referred to.
