Abstract

<PICT:0497076/III/1> <PICT:0497076/III/2> In a process for coating printing supports, particularly metal plates, with colloidal liquids for the photo-mechanical production of printing forms, the coating is effected in a sealed casing, and purified air or inert gas is passed, by pressure or suction, through this casing both before the coating of the plate is effected and also during the actual coating process. The casing may be rinsed with filtered water prior to the coating of the plate, and the air or inert gas may be heated. Apparatus for carrying out the process is shown in Fig. 1, comprising a centrifuge case a which may be sealed by a cover b carrying heaters d. The plate e to be coated is supported on a rotatable base f, g, and the dimensions of the case a and the speed of rotation of the plate e are such that excess coating fluid is not flung on to the face i of the case, but drops into water k. Air filtered at n is passed into the case a by a duct l. Rinsing water may be introduced through holes or tubes arranged in the cover b, through which holes or tubes the coating liquid may be subsequently supplied. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, air is introduced through a tube s, and passes through the water k to render it dust-free.
