Abstract
495,433. Copying by scanning. TAVY, L. DE. May 6, 1937, No. 5595/38. Divided out of 492,202 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 8, 1937. [Class 40 (iii)] A design element 8x, which occupies an aliquot part of the circumference and length of a roller 2 to be engraved, occupies a fraction of the circumference of the design carrier 8 and a plurality of scanning rays 4, 5 or reproducing devices 6, 7 are operative on different points of the circumferences. If two scanning rays are used at opposite points of the circumference and a single reproducing device, the design element occupies half the circumference, Fig. 1 (not shown). Alternatively, a single scanning ray and two reproducers are used. As shown, the design element occupies a quarter of the circumference, two scanning rays are 90‹ apart and two reproducers are at 180‹. Details of the scanning apparatus are described in Specification 492,202. The ends of the design carrier are joined by elastic and the scanning drum 1 can be varied in diameter, Fig. 4 (not shown). The vacant part of the design carrier is blackened to render the inoperative scanning ray ineffective, Fig. 5 (not shown). The photo-electric cells, on which the reflected light is incident, are connected to the recorders through a thermionic relay, Fig. 5 (not shown). The design may be reproduced on an intermediate drum, from which the printing roller is engraved by a contact copying process as described in Specification 492,222. A three-colour process may be used.
