Abstract

494,819. Carving wood. NIEUWENDIJK, C. VAN DEN. March 24, 1938, No. 9057. [Class 145 (i)] Plane surfaces are ornamentally recessed by pantographic apparatus in which a conical cutting tool and a conical tracer are employed, the model consisting of line members raised from a base while the tracer is guided only by the contact of its conical surface with the line members so that it may move in three directions. The tracer 9 is carried by a rod 1 slidably mounted in a pivoted supporting block 2 while the cutter 10 and its electric driving motor 11 are mounted on a member which is slidable on the rod 1 and is connected thereto by pantographic mechanism. The dimensions of the cones 9, 10 are in the same proportion as the pantographic ratio. When cutting, for example, a triangular recess, as shown in Fig. 5, the tracer 9 moves on the inside of the triangular raised model, shown in Fig. 3, so that it always engages two of the upper edges of the triangle, the dimensions being such that the apex of the tracer never touches the base.
