Abstract

491,460. Vehicle couplings ; shackles. BELCH, J. W. March 22, 1937, No. 8388. [Class 103 (v)] [Also in Group XXV] Relates to pin-and-shackle couplings for vehicles of the kind in which at least one pivoted catch 5 is mounted in a recess in the pin 2, and the pin and catch are provided with relatively-inclined co-operating-slots 9, 11, whereby movement of an operating-element 10 in one direction or the other causes the catch to be projected into engagement with the link or to be withdrawn into the pin so as to allow the pin to be moved for uncoupling purposes. According to the invention the catch 5 is adapted to engage an inturned retaining-ledge 4 formed on an external cylindrical element 3 which is arranged on one limb of the shackle coaxially with the pin. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a single catch 5 having a locking tooth or shoulder 8 is pivoted to the pin 2 between two flat tongues 6, while the operating-element is in the form of a lifting-ring 10, which falls by gravity to render the coupling self-locking, and also releases the catch 5 when an upward effort is exerted upon the ring. In a modification, Fig. 4, a pair of pivoted catches 12, 13 is employed. Complete removal of the pin 2 through the upper limb of the shackle may be prevented by an enlargement on the lower end of the pin.
