Abstract

Alkali metal alcoholates are made by reacting an anhydrous alcohol containing at least four carbon atoms with an alkali alcoholate of a lower alcohol containing not more than four carbon atoms and distilling off the free lower alcohol leaving the higher alcoholate in solution in the higher alcohol. Suitable higher alcohols are the monohydric primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic alcohols aromatic alcohols such as benzyl alcohol, and cyclic alcohols such as cyclohexanol. The alcoholate of the lower alcohol is preferably produced by the process described in Specification 490,387. In examples, (1) a solution of sodium amylate in amyl alcohol is produced by reacting amyl alcohol with sodium methylate obtained by reacting sodium amalgam with methyl alcohol in contact with a graphite electrode, the free methyl alcohol being finally distilled off; (2) sodium cyclohexanolate is produced in a similar manner, using sodium ethylate made by reacting sodium amalgam with ethyl alcohol in contact with an iron grid electrode. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains an example in which methyl alcohol is treated with sodium amalgam in the presence of an alloy electrode and butyl alcohol is added, the methyl alcohol being distilled off; carbon disulphide is then added to the solution of sodium butylate in butyl alcohol, and sodium butyl xanthate precipitates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
