Abstract

489,749. Drying leather. JOHNSON, G. W. (Proctor & Schwartz, Inc.) Nov. 25, 1937, No. 32549. [Class 76] [Also in Group XIII] Wet leather is dried prior to finishing by supporting it in a stretched condition and impinging jets of drying air at relatively closely spaced points over its entire surface. In the apparatus shown, pieces of leather are stretched on frames comprising plates 20, having perforations 20a for the attachment of stretching toggles, and outer frame members 21, 24. The frames are positioned within a chamber 1 between pairs of vertical perforated partitions 15 inclined to one another as shown. Air is caused to pass through the partitions 15, e.g. by means of a fan 10, and returns to an air conditioning chamber 2 containing heating or cooling units 6, 7 by way of upper and lower circulating chambers 4, 5. The frames are carried by tracks 26 to enable them to be run into and out of the drying chamber and carry plates 27 to close the openings in the casing.
