Abstract

484,302. Sewing - machines. BILDE, T. E. D. Nov. 2, 1936, No. 29754. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1935. [Class 112] An attachment for laying an additional thread over the edge of a fabric has a horizontal needle carrying this thread guided to pass above and below the fabric edge and operated by the usual needle bar. The bar 37 for the needle carrying the additional thread is reciprocated horizontally by the bell-crank lever 29 pivoted at 30 in a casing 20 and connected to the usual vertical needle bar 12 by a second bell-crank lever 33. A pin 38 on the bar 37 rides in slots 43 in a block 54 suitably shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to cause the horizontal needle 39 to pass alternatively above and below the edge of the fabric 18 to cause the additional thread carried by the needle 39 to be placed round the edges of the fabric and caught in the stitches formed by the usual stitching mechanism. The over- and-under movement of the needle 39 is facilitated by the engagement of a triangular piece at the end of a spring 47 with inclined surfaces on the end of the bar 37. Alternatively the bar 37 may carry a pawl 55, Fig. 4, deflected by the pin 42 to tilt the rear of the bar. An alternative method of imparting the hairpin motion to the horizontal needle bar 37 consists of a lever 29 having a pin 63 traversing the slots 43a, 43b to turn the bar 37 on its axis, its needle holding end being cranked as at 37a as shown in Fig. 6.
