[Class 131] In a hair-cutting machine comprising a cutter head carried by a handle, the cutter head having a hollow outer guard member 10, Fig. 10, with a series of cutter bars supported at each end., and a movable toothed cutter 8 inside the guard member, the slots 11 at the inner side of the guard member project beyond the cutter teeth 16 to permit free entry of hairs between the cutter bars so that they are in a position to be severed when advanced further into the slots of the guard member. As shown partly in Fig: 4, a two-part handle 1, 2 carries an electric motor on the shaft of which is a starting wheel 5. The guard member 10 is in two parts hinged at 12 and having depending lips 13 which are forced together against a spring 15 by adjusting screws 14. The movable cutter of the form shown in Fig. 10 has sharply pointed teeth 16 and bearing arms 34 co-operating with the side of the guard 10. The cutter is driven by an eccentric pin 6 on the motor shaft. Fig. 6 shows a modification employing a single cutter head secured to the handle by hollow threaded members 22 which also carry spring-urged pins for pressing the cutter against the guard member. The width and thickness of the guard bars is variable over their length becoming wider and thinner at the line defined by the points of the cutter teeth. The guard member may have two sets of slots 11 staggered as shown in Fig. 9. In a modification, Fig. 11, the cutter is indented at 43 to permit hair to approach the cutting edges freely. In the form shown in Fig. 21, the guard slots are of uniform thickness. Springs 85 press the movable cutter 84 against an adjustable bearing plate 86. Several other modifications having one and two sets of fixed cutter bars are described, registering projections and grooves being formed on the relatively movable parts to maintain them in position. In a further modification, Fig. 25, the movable cutter 104 is slotted at 110 and has tapered screws 111 at each end whereby the width of the slot may be varied. The ends of the cutterteeth thus can be adjusted in relation to slots 103 which are of varying depth. Fine teeth 112 formed between the two sets of slots are provided for the purpose of raking up hairs lying close to the skin. A raised central member similarly toothed may be provided on other forms of the invention or a bar 122, Fig. 29, having notches 123 may be used for the same purpose. The motor starting wheel 5, Fig. 4, may be replaced by a push-button starter which imparts an impulse to the motor shaft through a pawl and ratchet or through a one-way roller clutch.
