Abstract

468,248. Balancing - apparatus. AVELING-BARFORD, Ltd., and WHITING, T. H. B. Jan. 29, 1936, No. 2707. [Class 78 (ii)] [Also in Group XVII] The hinged lid of a vessel for cooking foodstuffs is provided with a counterweight D arranged to balance the weight of the lid between the intermediate positions X-Y. The counterweight is supported on a collar 13 on a rod 8 pivotally connected at the upper end to an arm 4 screwed into a boss attached to a bracket 5 on the lid, the lower end of the rod being connected to an arm 10 pivoted at 11 to a stirrup 12 attached to the underside of the vessel. To compensate for the diminished effective weight of the lid in the raised position O and for the increased weight in the closed position S, rods 15, 16 are pivoted to the bar 10, the upper ends of the rods passing into sockets 14 provided in the counterweight, where they are encircled by springs 2, 3, which respectively undergo maximum compression in the closed and fully open positions of the lid. Movement of the lid beyond the fully-open position is prevented by the boss to which the arm 4 is attached having a flat 20 engaging the rim of the pan, or the arm 10 is provided with an extension 18 adapted to engage a plate 19 on the base of the pan.
