Abstract

To enable a metal to be satisfactorily wetted by another metal of lower melting point it is first coated with a solution of a salt of a metal which will alloy with the wetting metal and then heated in a reducing atmosphere to break down and deposit the metal of the salt. The coated metal is then heated in a reducing atmosphere in contact with and to a temperature above the melting point of the wetting metal. The method may be employed for coating metals, particularly metals such as molybdenum and tungsten and alloy steels such as chrome steel and nickel chrome steel, with other metals such as copper or silver solders, or for brazing metals in which case both parts to be brazed are coated with the salt solution and heated, copper being then melted at the junction of the parts. Impregnated masses may be formed by coating metal particles with the salt solution, heating them to break down the salt, pressing the coated particles into the desired form, and then heating the mass in a reducing atmosphere in contact with the impregnating metal. The method may also be used for repairing defective parts in shaftings &c. In coating molybdenum with copper, silver nitrate is preferably used as the salt but the nitrates, nitrites, and chlorides of silver, iron, cobalt, nickel, and copper may be used.
