Abstract

466,413. Knitting. HOLMES, H. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd. Oct. 22, 1935, No. 29171. [Class 74 (ii)] A method of knitting a welt preceded by a separating course in an odd rib fabric comprises relatively shogging the needle beds to bring the needles as near as possible to a 1 x 1 rib formation, subsequently knitting the separating course and in the next one or more courses knitting tuck stitches on the needles allocated to those wales of pairs of adjacent like wales, in which laddering would normally occur. The needle layout in the embodiment shown is for 3 x 2 rib as indicated by the letters C, D in the Figure. The sequence of operations is as follows. Courses 1-4, cylinder needles knit, dial needles are inoperative. The dial is then shogged one needle space to the left. Course 5, all needles knit. Courses 6, 7, dial needles inoperative, cylinder needles knit. Course 8, all needles knit. Course 9, dial needles inoperative, left hand cylinder needle in each group of three tucks, remainder knit. Course 10, dial needles inoperative, cylinder needles knit. Separating course 11, all needles knit. Cylinder needles are now raised to clear height and lowered to cast off their stitches. Course 12, all needles knit. Course 13, as course 9. Courses 14-16 dial needles inoperative, cylinder needles knit. Course 17, as in courses 9 and 13. The dial is then shogged back to form 3 x 2 work and knitting is continued on all needles. The tuck stitches in one of each pair of plain wales which lie adjacent to one another, prevent laddering at these points. The method is applicable to any other odd-rib fabric. The next length of knitting may be started in 3 x 2 rib or may be preceded by a length of knitting approximating to a 1 x 1 rib as in courses 5-8.
