Abstract
462,499. Filters. MABAG MASCHINENUND APPARATEBAU AKT.. GES., and 'NEUROTH, F. April 8, 1936, No. 10286. [Class 46] Apparatus for the separation of water from liquid fuels comprises a filter of bath sponge 4 which will retain water. The sponge is disposed between perforated discs 2, 3 and the disc 3 is attached to a rod 10 which is moved to compress the sponge when required to express water therefrom. The fuel enters by a pipe 5 and passes down a pipe 6 to a basin 7 where most of the water remains out of the line of flow of the fuel. The fuel passes up through the filter to an outlet 8. The rod 10 may be moved by a rack 11 and toothed wheel 12 and may be periodically operated by clockwork or from external mechanism such as the starter mechanism or motor of an aircraft. The water is automatically removed from the basin 7 by a float 14 operating a valve 15. The discs 2, 3 may be in the form of grids or woven wire. In another form of filter for use when filling aircraft tanks, the fuel rises through the sponge filter and passes out down a central pipe which is movable and connected to one of the spongeretaining discs to compress the sponge. In another form, the sponges are held in a cage interchangeably disposed in the filter chamber. A grating forms the top of the cage and is moved by a hand wheel and screw spindle to compress the sponge. A liquid level gauge is provided to record the height of water in the discharge basin. Specifications 15330 /88, [Class 46], and 422,748 are referred to.
