[Class 146 (i)] In a binder 1 for periodicals and the like of the kind in which the periodicals 6 are secured by means of wire rods 5 engaging in the folds, the rodretaining device at each end of the binder is provided with a rodreceiving slot or groove of a width equal to or slightly greater than the rod diameter and arranged so that a substantial length of each rod-end lies against or close to the wall of the slot nearest the back of the binder. The resistance of each rod to bending is thus increased and removal of the wires 5 from the grooves is rendered more difficult. In one form, Fig. 2, the retaining-device 3 is in the form of a bar of wood, metal, or synthetic resin having a groove 4 with a depth lengthwise of the rods approximately equal to the length of rod to be accommodated therein and open at the ends for the insertion of the rods, the width being such that the rods are sliding fits therein. In modified arrangements, each retaining device is formed by bending a piece of sheet-metal 7, Fig. 7, into channel-section with the end 8 substantially parallel to the front wall 9, the slot 11 being formed close to the inturned end 8, which constitutes the inner wall of the slot. The space between the parts 8, 9 is equal approximately to the rod diameter in the form shown but may be greater than this, and one or both of the parts 8, 9 may be parallel to the back. Where the parts 8, 9 are inclined to the back, Fig. 7, the rod-ends are bent correspondingly to increase the resistance to their removal. The rod 5 may have cranked parts 17, Fig. 2, for engaging the folds of periodicals bound by means of staples 15. Instead of a continuous groove 4, a number of short grooves may be employed or separate holes for each rod provided.
