Abstract

460,306. Drying fabrics. RIDGWAY, W., HANNAY, R. J., and BERRY, D. S. Aug. 30, 1935, No. 24211. [Class 34 (i)] In a method of drying fabrics, including crÛpe fabrics and fabrics of paper, hair, or wool, the fabric is delivered to a drying-apparatus at a speed which is greater than the speed of conveyers receiving the fabric within the apparatus, so that the fabric assumes a wavy or sinuous form and passes from one conveyer to another in such a manner as to permit of a fresh disposition of the waves, shrinkage of the fabric while drying taking place without tension. In the construction shown, the drying chamber is divided into four sections, each provided with endless conveyers. The fabric f to be dried is fed through rollers f<1> and delivered on to the conveyer a, passing eventually over all the conveyers in the first section 1. It then is guided on to the conveyer c in the second section 2 and is passed in similar manner over all the conveyers in that section and in the remaining sections, being finally withdrawn from the drying apparatus by rollers g. The speed of feed of the fabric is greater than that of the conveyer so that the fabric is carried forward in sinuous form, as shown. The conveyers are of lattice form and are provided underneath the upper stretch with heating coils b. Over each conveyer is a duct d through which hot air is passed, the air being extracted through ducts e. The ducts d, e are connected by trunks leading to a fan h associated with a heater i, so that the air from the drying chamber is re-heated and re-circulated. Some of the air escapes to atmosphere through outlets j, and fresh air is admitted through an inlet with control valve i <1>.
