Abstract

A process for the production and propagation of rapid-growing hybrid trees, of the poplar or other families, to provide raw material for the paper-making and other industries, consists in artificially pollinating female flowers with pollen from male flowers of another tree of the same family but different species, growing seedlings from the resulting seeds, selecting the seedlings which possess the largest amounts of root-producing hormones and show at least 50 per cent increased dimensions and 15 per cent increased fibre length as compared with the parent trees at the same age, taking cuttings or prunings from the selected seedlings, saturating them with moisture, and raising trees from them by sexless propagation. The seedlings may be grown in poor mineralized soil. Green or other cuttings taken from the seedlings or the resulting trees may be dried after being saturated with moisture and their upper parts may be coated with a wax, paraffin, or other waterproofing material having a minimum melting-point of 50 DEG C. A water-proofing material may be applied as a solution in a solvent. When planting the cuttings the lower part, amounting to 2/3 to 4/5 of the cutting, is inserted in the soil. A dilute suspension of Bordeaux mixture or other disinfectant may be used instead of water for saturating the cuttings. A list of the different species of trees which may be paired to produce the hybrids is given in the Specification. U.S.A. Specification 1,943,030 is referred to.
